  16. <p>The sons of a video mogul are accused of slaying their parents
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     Even in Hollywood the script seemed bizarre: an
  19. entertainment mogul and his wife are cut down by multiple
  20. shotgun blasts as they sit watching television and snacking on
  21. berries and cream in their Beverly Hills mansion. Their two
  22. handsome sons return home from an evening at the movies to
  23. discover the horribly mangled bodies. The police probe the
  24. possibility of a Mafia hit but find nothing. The boys inherit
  25. their parents' fortune, estimated at at least $14 million, and
  26. a $400,000 insurance policy. Seven months later, the scenario
  27. takes a shocking twist when police arrest the orphaned sons and
  28. charge them with committing the killings.

  30. <p>     Jose Menendez was only 45 when he was killed in August; his
  31. wife Mary Louise was 44. He had been a hustling Cuban kid sent
  32. to the U.S. by his well-to-do parents when he was 16 to avoid
  33. indoctrination by the then new Castro regime. He rose rapidly
  34. in the rental-car business but made his real mark as a shrewd
  35. operator in the record-and-video distribution business. He
  36. founded his own video- and music-software distribution company,
  37. Live Entertainment Inc., and joined the board of directors of
  38. Carolco Pictures Inc., producer of the Rambo films. The couple
  39. and their two athletically gifted sons, Joseph Lyle, 22, and
  40. Erik Galen, 19, were described as a handsome, happy family,
  41. often seen playing tennis and other sports together.

  43. <p>     After the slayings, the sons dealt with their grief in
  44. different fashions. The elder bought a Porsche and a restaurant
  45. in Princeton, near the university from which he had been
  46. expelled in 1988 because of honor-code violations. His brother
  47. abandoned plans to enter UCLA and joined the junior
  48. professional tennis circuit.

  50. <p>     But early on, says Lieut. Russell Olson, the Beverly Hills
  51. chief of detectives, "we had suspicions of the boys'
  52. involvement." Police had ruled out a gangland murder because
  53. of the sheer savagery of the attack. "Mob killings are `clean';
  54. this one wasn't," says an officer. Suspicions were further
  55. heightened when family members told police that a copy of what
  56. might have been a new will had been erased from Jose Menendez's
  57. home computer. "The focus became very clear over the past few
  58. months," said Chief of Police Marvin Iannone. There was some
  59. physical evidence, but "we were waiting for the glue binding it
  60. together."

  62. <p>     That came when investigators learned that all of the
  63. Menendez family had been consulting a psychologist, Jerome
  64. Oziel. After several people approached the police with new
  65. information in late February, officers armed with a search
  66. warrant confiscated records and tapes from the psychologist's
  67. office. Lawyers for the Menendez brothers argued that seizure
  68. of the tapes violated the laws governing doctor-patient
  69. confidentiality. But the district attorney, Ira Reiner, said
  70. the confidentiality rule can be broken when a patient presents
  71. a continuing danger or threat. The district attorney filed
  72. murder charges against the Menendez brothers, asking for the
  73. death penalty. Said Reiner: "It's been our experience in the
  74. district attorney's office that $14 million provides ample
  75. motive for someone to kill somebody."
